Dear friends,
I want to begin by saying thank you.
Thank you to everyone who supported this campaign, contributed, donated, volunteered, encouraged me, and believed in my ability to make a difference. Your support has meant more than I can fully express.
Unfortunately, politics is as much about strategy as it is about helping the people of the district. When I began this process, there were only two Democrats in the race. As an independent candidate, I saw a real path forward: bringing together Republican voters, unenrolled voters, and Democrats who are dissatisfied with the way Congress is currently operating.
I have recently learned that a prior Republican candidate has re-entered the race. While a large share of Massachusetts voters are independent or unenrolled in a major party, the reality is that, on Election Day, voters have overwhelmingly voted along party lines since the year 2000. Looking at prior MA-08 races confirms this trend. Before 2000, it was more common for voters to split their tickets, supporting one party at the top of the ballot while choosing different candidates for more local representation. Since then, that has changed dramatically.
With both Democrats and Republicans in the race, there is no realistic path forward for an independent candidate in this election.
That does not mean I am any less passionate about improving our political discourse, challenging the rise of identity politics, or standing up for the communities that deserve better representation. It does mean I need to be strategic about where I put my time, energy, and focus.
I am deeply grateful to everyone who believed in me and in this campaign. Your support showed me that there are many people who still want thoughtful, independent leadership and a better way forward.
This is not the end. There is more to come, and I will be in touch.
With sincere gratitude,
Michael
