Reforming Federal Government

What happened to a government of the people, by the people, for the people? I strongly beleive that fixing the following areas first will cascade down to other areas:

  • Term limits for Congress. Elected officials should not be a lifetime appointment
  • US House of Representatives should move from 2 to 3 years. 2 years means they are always fundraising
  • US Senators should move from 6 years to 4
  • Corporations are not people. They should not be able to inject massive amounts of money into our elections
  • Congress should not be able to trade stocks. I couldn't trade when I worked in financial services and the same rules should apply for Congress
  • Congress should have to use the same heallthcare plans they vote for the people. If they want better healthcare, then make it for the people they work for as well
  • If the government shuts down, so should Congress pay
  • No free healthcare

Unfortunately, some of these items above are myths about Congress. For example, Congress is already subject to the same insider trading rules as the general public. But, who is watching Congress? Congress is required to use the District of Columbia's SHOP exchange, known as DC Health Link. It's reported there are more than 100,000 people on the DC Health Link.

The other concerns above are fair game for change.
